Tummy time is one of those simple, everyday moments that quietly does so much for your baby—and it can actually be really sweet and fun, too.

At its core, tummy time is about strength, confidence, and curiosity. When babies spend time on their bellies (while awake and supervised), they’re building the muscles they need for rolling, crawling, sitting, and eventually walking. Neck, shoulders, arms, core—it’s all happening right there on the floor.

But it’s not just physical.

Tummy time is also where babies begin to engage with the world. They lift their heads, make eye contact, track your face, bat at toys, and start to realize: I can move my body. That sense of capability is powerful, even in the tiniest humans.

Why tummy time matters

  • Supports motor development and coordination

  • Helps prevent flat spots on the head

How to Do Tummy Time (the gentle, no-stress way) 🤍

Tummy time is simply letting your baby spend time on their belly while awake and supervised—and there’s no single “right” way to do it. Think connection first, perfection last.

1. Start early & start small

You can begin tummy time from day one. In the early weeks, even 30–60 seconds at a time counts. Aim for short, frequent sessions throughout the day rather than one long stretch.

2. Try different tummy time positions

Mix it up to keep it comfortable and interesting:

  • On your chest
    Lie back and place your baby tummy-down on your chest. They’ll naturally lift their head to look at you—this is tummy time and bonding.

  • On the floor
    Place baby on a soft mat or blanket. Get down at eye level, talk, sing, smile, or make funny faces.

  • With support
    Roll a small towel or use a tummy-time pillow under their chest to give a little lift if they’re still building strength.

  • Lap tummy time
    Lay baby belly-down across your legs while you sit—great for variety and comfort.

3. Make it engaging

  • Use a baby-safe mirror so they can see their reflection

  • Place a favorite toy just within sight

  • Sing songs or narrate what they’re doing

  • Change locations (living room, nursery, outside on a blanket)

Your attention is the best “toy.”

4. Follow your baby’s cues

Some fussing is normal—muscles are working! But if your baby is upset, take a break and try again later. Ending tummy time on a positive note builds trust and confidence.

5. Build up gradually

Over time, increase the length of sessions as your baby gets stronger. By a few months old, many babies work up to a total of 20–60 minutes per day, spread out.

6. Keep safety first

  • Always supervise tummy time

  • Place baby on a firm, flat surface

  • Tummy time is only for awake time—babies should always sleep on their backs
