SUMMER IS HERE !

Plan The Perfect Family Beach Day

A Soul Tribe Guide to Sun, Sand, and Stress-Free Summer Memories

There is something magical about a family beach day.

The salty air.

The sound of the waves.

Tiny footprints in the sand.

The way time seems to slow down when there is nowhere to be except right where you are.

Some of my favorite memories with Michael have happened at the beach. Long lazy days spent building sandcastles, searching for shells, watching dolphins play offshore, and ending the evening gathered around a beach bonfire as the sun disappears into the horizon.

The good news?

The perfect beach day doesn't require perfection.

Just a little planning, a few essentials, and a willingness to embrace the adventure.

Step One: Pack the Night Before

Nothing adds stress to a beach day like scrambling around the house looking for sunscreen and towels while everyone is ready to leave.

I like to pack everything the evening before.

Beach Day Essentials

☀️ Sunscreen

☀️ Beach umbrella or shade tent

☀️ Beach towels

☀️ Hats and sunglasses

☀️ Extra clothes

☀️ Swimsuits

☀️ Wet bag for damp items

☀️ Water bottles

☀️ Baby wipes

☀️ First aid kit

☀️ Portable phone charger

☀️ Beach blanket

☀️ Sand toys

☀️ Boogie boards

☀️ Beach wagon

Keep a dedicated beach bin in your garage so you're always ready for spontaneous beach adventures.

Step Two: Pack Easy Snacks and Lunch

Hungry kids can quickly turn a dreamy beach day into a meltdown.

Simple is best.

Favorite Beach Snacks

🍉 Watermelon

🍓 Berries

🥒 Sliced cucumbers

🧀 Cheese sticks

🥨 Pretzels

🥜 Trail mix

🍎 Apples

🧃 Electrolyte drinks

🥪 Sandwiches or wraps

Freeze water bottles the night before to help keep everything cool.

Step Three: Plan for Every Age

One of the beautiful things about the beach is that there is truly something for everyone.

Babies

  • Shade tent

  • Sand-free blanket

  • Favorite toys

  • Extra diapers and wipes

  • Lightweight carrier

Toddlers

  • Buckets and shovels

  • Water table toys

  • Sandcastle building

  • Beach scavenger hunt

School-Age Kids

  • Boogie boards

  • Shell collecting

  • Beach games

  • Surf lessons

  • Sand sculpture contests

Teens

  • Volleyball

  • Paddle boarding

  • Photography

  • Reading

  • Sunset walks

Parents

  • A good book

  • Journal

  • Beach chair

  • Deep breaths

  • Permission to relax

Step Four: Create a Beach Day Rhythm

Rather than trying to entertain everyone every minute, create a natural flow.

Morning

Arrive early before the crowds.

Enjoy cooler temperatures.

Play in the water.

Build sandcastles.

Explore tide pools.

Midday

Take a snack break.

Read under the umbrella.

Rest.

Recharge.

Afternoon

Beach games.

Swimming.

Shell hunting.

Boogie boarding.

Sunset

This is my favorite part.

Wrap up in sweatshirts.

Take a family walk along the shoreline.

Watch the sky turn pink and gold.

If local regulations allow, gather around a beach bonfire and "see down the sun" together.

These are often the moments children remember most.

Beach Day Traditions Worth Starting

Some of the most meaningful family cultures are built around simple traditions.

Try:

  • Annual summer beach photo

  • Sunset gratitude circle

  • Shell collection jar

  • Family beach picnic

  • Summer bucket list challenge

  • Beach clean-up walk before leaving

These little rituals become the memories your children carry into adulthood.

And if you can get to the ocean this summer, fantastic.

But don't worry if the beach isn't nearby.

A day at the lake beach can be just as magical.

Children don't care whether the water is salty or fresh. They simply remember how it felt to splash, explore, laugh, and spend time with the people they love.

Whether you're collecting seashells along the coast, skipping rocks across a mountain lake, floating on an inner tube, or enjoying a picnic by the water's edge, the real magic isn't the destination.

It's the connection.

It's the memories you're creating together.

So don't get caught up in making it perfect.

Find a patch of sand, a shoreline, a dock, or a quiet place by the water and let summer do what it does best—slow everyone down and bring families together.

The sunshine, the fresh air, and the laughter are what your children will remember most.
